Beyond the Book Ban: Teaching History and Civics in a Divided Country

A Conference for Teachers of Grades 3 to 8 and School Librarians

October 28, 2024
8:00 AM - 3:30 PM

The teaching of social studies prepares young people to learn what it means to live in and participate in a democracy. With book bans on the rise and states passing legislation that limits the teaching of “divisive concepts,” educators face complex challenges to their professional role. How can educators navigate the threats to social studies teaching? What stories can be told that help build historical context and ensure that a variety of voices are heard in the classroom? Why is critical history and robust civic education essential to a healthy democracy?

Join keynote speaker Heather McGhee and award-winning authors Alice Faye Duncan, Kekla Magoon, and Traci Sorell to discuss how children’s literature, critical thinking, and tested classroom strategies can help educators develop and implement effective and relevant social studies teaching.

Additionally, conference participants will be able to browse and purchase books, converse with colleagues, meet the authors, and participate in workshops on using children's literature to teach hard history and facilitating difficult conversations in the classroom.

Registration will begin in August.
