Humphrey’s campaign in Randolph County during the 1960 primary; mining communities in southern WV; which of JFK’s domestic policies played well in WV; the students and faculty of Randolph County colleges and JFK’s campaign; Republican hostility towards JFK versus religious hostility in the 1960 election; the impact of JFK’s war record on the WV vote; how the JFK campaign helped WV’s national image and reputation; and the 1960 Democratic National Convention, among other issues.

This folder contains a speech titled, “A New Program for Coal,” given by Senator John F. Kennedy in Fairmont, West Virginia. In his speech Senator Kennedy discusses the decline of employment in the coal industry and resulting poverty, particularly in West Virginia. He goes on to propose a new coal program containing four central points: the establishment of a national fuels policy; research and development for new uses of coal; the building of new steam plants to convert coal into electricity; and encouraging long-term industrial development in West Virginia.
