Isaiah Zagar served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Peru from 1964 to 1966. At the time he joined, he was an artist. Zagar was deselected in training, then re-selected. He served alongside his wife. The couple worked in various Peruvian locations and after six months, finally settled on helping to develop a crafts industry.
