President John F. Kennedy and astronaut Lieutenant Colonel John Glenn, Jr. look inside space capsule Friendship 7 following the presentation ceremony of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel Glenn at Hangar 'S,’ Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Brevard County, Florida. The Friendship 7 carried Glenn in orbit around the earth three times. Those looking on include: Senator Robert S. Kerr of Oklahoma (in back, left of Glenn, wearing glasses), Congressman A. Sydney Herlong, Jr. of Florida (in back, right of Senator Kerr), Special Assistant to the President Lawrence “Larry” O’Brien (partially hidden, behind Congressman Herlong), Lieutenant Colonel Glenn's son David Glenn (partially hidden behind Glenn), Senator George Smathers of Florida (back right), and Director of the Manned Spacecraft Center Dr. Robert Gilruth (far right, in front of Senator Smathers). The following is stamped on the verso of the photograph: "Cecil W. Stoughton, Office of the Military Aide to the President." This is cropped version of a photograph that is also in the Cecil Stoughton (Office of the Military Aide) series, White House Photograph collection (see ST-A13-60-62).
