Physical DescriptionNativity scene made of mother of pearl inset into a shadow box in the shape of a star. The entire surface is inlaid with mother of pearl. A hinged wooden stand is attached to back side for support. Inscribed verso, on stand: "PRESENTED FROM HIS MAJESTY/ KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN/ TO/ MISS CAROLINE J. [sic] KENNEDY/ ON THE OCCASION OF HER BIRTHDAY."
Historical NoteThis carved creche was presented to Caroline Kennedy on December 7, 1963 by Hussein bin Tal, King of Jordan (1953-1999). Her brother was given a similar piece. Both children's birthdays fell in November.

Custodial History NoteItem was a gift to President and Mrs. Kennedy from King Hussein Bin Talal, King of Jordan. It was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
